India’s Solar Capacity Crosses 143 GW in 2026

India’s solar energy sector continues to expand rapidly, with the country’s total installed solar capacity crossing 143 GW by the end of February 2026. The milestone reflects the strong growth of renewable energy in India and highlights solar power as the leading contributor to the country’s clean energy transition.

Strong Momentum in Early 2026

According to industry data, India’s cumulative solar photovoltaic capacity reached about 143,604 MW, showing continued expansion of solar installations across the country. Solar energy now represents more than 66% of India’s renewable energy capacity, excluding large hydropower projects, underscoring its dominant role in the renewable energy mix.

The year 2026 has begun with strong installation momentum. During the first two months of the year alone, India added nearly 7.8 GW of new solar capacity, indicating robust project execution and a strong pipeline of solar developments nationwide.

Rapid Monthly Growth

Solar installations remained particularly strong in February 2026, when around 3 GW of solar capacity was added in a single month. This represented a month-on-month growth of more than 3.5%, reflecting increased commissioning of large solar projects and continued expansion of rooftop solar systems.

The consistent growth highlights the sector’s ability to maintain momentum despite global supply chain challenges affecting solar components.

Solar Power Leading India’s Energy Transition

Solar energy has emerged as a cornerstone of India’s clean energy strategy. The country is currently one of the world’s fastest-growing solar markets and ranks among the top solar power producers globally.

Large solar parks, utility-scale projects, and rooftop installations have collectively driven this growth. States such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu remain key centres for solar capacity expansion due to favourable sunlight conditions and supportive policy frameworks.

Path Towards Future Renewable Targets

India’s long-term renewable energy strategy aims to significantly expand non-fossil power generation. The government has set ambitious goals to increase renewable capacity and reduce reliance on fossil fuels as part of its climate commitments.

Solar power is expected to play a crucial role in achieving these targets, supported by policies encouraging large solar parks, rooftop installations, and hybrid renewable projects combining solar and wind energy.

Outlook for the Solar Sector

With strong project pipelines, falling technology costs, and supportive policies, India’s solar industry is expected to continue its rapid expansion in the coming years. Analysts believe the sector will remain the primary driver of India’s renewable energy growth, helping the country move closer to its long-term clean energy and climate goals.
