The discovery of hidden communication devices in Chinese-made solar inverters has confirmed longstanding fears about the vulnerabilities in India’s renewable energy infrastructure. These devices can be activated remotely, allowing foreign entities to disrupt power supply, leading to potential blackouts and compromising national security.

India’s dependence on Chinese solar technology is significant, with a large portion of the equipment either imported directly or assembled using Chinese components. This reliance extends to software and data management systems, which are often operated by Chinese firms. Such control over critical infrastructure components poses a direct threat to India’s energy security.

In response, the Indian government has taken proactive measures, including the implementation of stringent testing protocols for imported power equipment and the promotion of domestic manufacturing under initiatives like “Make in India.” These steps aim to reduce dependency on foreign technology and enhance the resilience of the country’s power infrastructure.
