The Central Mine Planning and Design Institute Limited (CMPDI) has begun conducting drone-based land and topographical surveys in the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh to support Coal India Limited’s proposed solar power projects. The initiative is part of efforts to utilise land in the region for large-scale renewable energy development.
Drone Technology for Accurate Mapping
CMPDI is using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to capture high-resolution images and detailed geospatial data of the proposed project areas. These drone surveys help generate precise topographical maps, land contours, and digital terrain models, which are essential for planning solar installations.
The use of drone technology allows survey teams to cover large and difficult terrains quickly and accurately compared to traditional ground-based surveying methods.
Supporting Coal India’s Renewable Energy Plans
Coal India has been expanding its focus on renewable energy projects, particularly solar power, as part of its strategy to diversify beyond coal. The solar projects proposed in Bundelkhand aim to make productive use of available land while contributing to India’s clean energy capacity.
Once completed, these projects are expected to generate substantial solar power and support India’s transition towards sustainable energy sources.
Advantages of Drone-Based Surveys
Drone surveys offer several benefits for large infrastructure and renewable energy projects, including:
- Faster and more accurate data collection
- Detailed mapping of land features and terrain
- Reduced need for extensive ground surveys
- Improved planning and project design
By adopting advanced surveying technologies, CMPDI is helping accelerate project planning and execution for renewable energy developments.
Boosting Solar Development in Bundelkhand
Bundelkhand has been identified as a suitable region for solar power projects due to its high solar radiation levels and large land availability. The ongoing drone surveys will provide critical data required for designing solar parks and related infrastructure in the area.
The initiative reflects the growing shift within India’s energy sector, where traditional coal companies are increasingly investing in renewable energy to support the country’s long-term clean energy goals.
