Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasised Kerala’s strong potential in the floating solar power sector, noting that the state’s numerous water bodies make it an ideal location for expanding renewable energy projects. During his visit to Kochi, the Prime Minister said that floating solar technology can help strengthen clean energy production while supporting infrastructure development in the state.
Floating Solar Project in West Kallada
As part of the visit, Modi laid the foundation stone for a 50-MW floating solar power project at West Kallada in Kollam district. The project will be developed by NHPC Limited with an investment of around ₹260 crore and is expected to enhance Kerala’s renewable energy capacity.
Floating solar plants are installed on reservoirs, lakes, or other water bodies, allowing electricity generation without occupying valuable land. The Prime Minister noted that such projects are particularly suitable for Kerala because of its extensive network of rivers, lakes, and reservoirs.
Part of a Larger Infrastructure Push
The floating solar initiative was announced alongside several infrastructure and industrial projects worth about ₹10,800–₹11,000 crore launched during the Prime Minister’s visit to Kerala. These projects aim to strengthen connectivity, boost industrial growth, and create new employment opportunities in the state.
Major initiatives unveiled during the event included:
- A polypropylene unit at the Kochi Refinery to strengthen India’s petrochemical sector
- Expansion of key national highway stretches to improve connectivity
- Renewable energy initiatives such as the floating solar project
Importance of Floating Solar in India’s Energy Transition
Floating solar technology is gaining attention across India because it offers several advantages:
- Efficient use of water bodies for power generation
- Reduced land requirements for large solar installations
- Lower water evaporation from reservoirs
- Improved efficiency due to the cooling effect of water
Kerala has already pioneered floating solar projects, including installations on reservoirs and dams across the state. These projects demonstrate how renewable energy can be integrated with existing water infrastructure.
Supporting India’s Clean Energy Goals
The Prime Minister also highlighted India’s growing role as a major solar power producer and stressed the importance of expanding renewable energy sources to meet rising electricity demand. Increasing clean energy generation is essential for supporting industrial growth, reducing carbon emissions, and ensuring long-term energy security.
With favourable geography and increasing investments, Kerala could become an important hub for floating solar power, contributing significantly to India’s renewable energy transition.
