OCP Group has taken a significant leap in its energy transition journey by commissioning the first phase of its national solar programme — delivering 202 MWp of photovoltaic (PV) capacity across several sites, a major stride toward decarbonisation and sustainable industry.
What’s New: Three Solar Plants Now Operational
The newly launched solar farms are situated at three sites:
- Benguerir — 67 MWp
- Foum Tizi — 30 MWp
- Oulad Farès (Khouribga) — 105 MWp, now the largest operational PV plant in Morocco
These installations already supply energy to multiple mining and industrial facilities belonging to OCP, including production and processing operations — reducing reliance on fossil-fuel electricity and lowering carbon emissions.
Why It Matters: Clean Energy & Industrial Transformation
- Securing energy supply & reducing carbon footprint: The shift helps meet a significant portion of OCP’s daytime energy requirements through renewable sources, stabilising energy costs and cutting greenhouse-gas emissions.
- Industrial sustainability: For a global leader in phosphate-based fertiliser production and related industrial operations, using cleaner electricity supports sustainable manufacturing and enhances long-term competitiveness.
- Strategic reuse of land: Some solar farms are deployed on rehabilitated mining lands — a clever example of circular land management and sustainable redevelopment of former extractive sites.
The Broader Vision: Renewable Ambitions for 2027 and Beyond
This solar rollout is part of OCP’s broader Green Investment Programme (2023–2027), which aims to power all its industrial and mining operations with renewable energy by 2027 — targeting 1.2 GW of green capacity, and eventually more than 2 GW.
Furthermore, the company is preparing to implement a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS), designed to store solar energy and deliver stable power even when sunlight isn’t available — a key step to address intermittency issues and ensure continuous clean energy supply.
What This Could Mean for the Future
- Green industrial growth: As OCP powers its operations with renewable energy, factories, mining sites, and associated industries may gradually reduce their carbon footprint, aligning with global calls for sustainability.
- Demonstration for others: OCP’s transition could inspire other large industrial players to adopt similar renewable-energy strategies, potentially accelerating clean-energy adoption across sectors.
- Energy security and cost control: Local generation reduces dependence on external power sources, offering more stable, predictable energy costs — especially valuable for energy-intensive industries.
- Positive environmental impact: Fewer emissions and cleaner energy usage contribute to climate goals, better air quality, and more sustainable industrial development.
The commissioning of 202 MWp of solar PV by OCP Green Energy marks a landmark moment in the firm’s commitment to sustainability and industrial transformation. By combining large-scale renewable electricity generation with forward-looking plans for energy storage and expansion, OCP is positioning itself at the forefront of the clean-energy transition — demonstrating that heavy industries need not be at odds with environmental responsibility.
